FROM NEAR DEATH TO 4 x GOLD MEDAL PARALYMPIAN

Thanks to Harwell Homes, for the first time ever! Decorated Gold Medal Paralympian and former Australian Army combat engineer Curtis McGrath OAM will visit Cairns as the keynote speaker for the FNQ Legacy Gala Ball, a celebrated bi-annual event dedicated to supporting the families of fallen and incapacitated veterans.

While on patrol in Afghanistan in 2012, Curtis stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED), losing both his legs in the blast. Just 20 minutes later, as he was being medevaced out, he made a bold promise: “I’ll be right, I’ll go to the Paralympics.” Staying true to his word, he became one of the world’s most successful para-canoeists, securing four Paralympic gold medals and 13 world championship titles.

Beyond his sporting success, Curtis is a passionate advocate for veterans and people with disabilities, serving as Co-Captain of the Australian Paralympic Team for the Paris 2024 Games, a Director at Deloitte as a Paralympic Advisor, and an Ambassador for the Invictus Games Australia. He also continues to compete at the highest level, inspiring athletes around the world. More information about his journey can be found at Paralympics Australia.
