Can change a child’s life by sending them to a Legacy Camp. These camps give children the opportunity to build resilience, find peer support, and gain new experiences, providing them with the skills and friendships they need for the future. Kosha, on her kids attending Legacy camps: "Death can be intensely isolating for children. To share stories, memories, and love with other kids who just ‘get it’ is a wholesome part of healing. (Attending a Legacy camp) It was hard, it was confronting, but it was completely enriching and humbling… More valuable than money and more appreciated than I can express."

We lost him after he made it home - Mel's Story

Making it home, your considered one of the lucky ones. But the war doesn't end when you get home. Steve battled with PTSD in silence.

He tried his best to show up for his two little girls and baby boy, even when everything was falling apart inside.

But one night, the silence became permanent.

Mel found herself widowed at 34, left to raise two daughters and her son, far too young to understand why their dad was gone.

There was no time to grieve. Just paperwork, bills, and three small hearts breaking alongside her own.

"I felt like I was drowning," Mel said. "I didn't know how to explain to my children that their dad didn't die in war but because of his service."

Then FNQ Legacy stepped in. Legacy helped to cover the kids’ education and sporting expenses, but more than that, Legacy gave Mel someone she could count on. Her Legatee became like family, a reminder that they aren’t on this journey alone.

Eight years on, her eldest is getting ready to graduate high school and has her sights set on studying Marine Biology, and one day becoming a Legatee herself.

Meanwhile, the two younger ones are chasing big dreams of playing netball and basketball professionally.

"FNQ Legacy didn’t just get us through the darkest time of our lives, they gave us hope. And they’re still here, standing with us,” Mel says.

THE ALLEN FAMILY - CAIRNS

FAMILIES ARE IN NEED

Many families are out of sight but not out of crisis. Some are struggling to with the emotional and financial toll of losing a loved one, while others are facing the daily challenge of supporting a veteran living with the scars of service - both seen and unseen.

These parents and children, struggling to make ends meet, often face impossible choices between necessities.
