About Us

Legacy is an iconic Australian charity that was established in 1923 and founded on a promise made from one digger to another – to “look after the missus and the kids.”

THE REALITY

Could you imagine - if it's even possible - that overnight, you find yourself engulfed in a whirlwind of emotions - grief, disbelief, and a deep sense of isolation.

Pratical challenges also arise, from financial uncertainties to managing daily responsibilities alone.

At FNQ Legacy, we understand these overwhelming struggles firsthand.

We stand alongside the families of deceased or incapacitated veterans, offering essential support and compassion during their darkest moments.

Our mission is to provide stability, care, and a beacon of hope as they navigate the difficult journey of grief and adjustment.

THE FACTS

The 2021 census found that 581,139 have served or are currently serving in the Australia Defence Force.

That's 1 in 20 households who are impacted by the service and sacrifice of our veterans.

The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide found, between 1997 and 2021 at least 1677 veteran deaths have been by suicide.

Most of us don't understand what it's like to navigate the toll of military life, the uncertainty, or the unseen scars veterans carry with them after their service, but nearly all of us could relate to losing a loved one.

It’s a reality that touches many, yet remains largely unseen.

Just as unexpected bills or personal crises can quickly strain finances, the impact of losing a partner can be overwhelming—emotionally, practically, and financially.

The Next Step

Join us on our mission to Support Our Veterans' Families.

We don't have all the answers, but what we can provide is unwavering dedication, compassionate support, and a community that cares deeply about honouring their service and sacrifices.

And for as little as $5 a week, you can provide a comforting cup of coffee and a listening ear to someone who may be feeling isolated or in need of companionship.

Your small gesture of kindness can brighten their day and remind them that they are not alone in their journey.

Join us in making a difference, one cup and conversation at a time.

Mia's Story

Mia’s dad gave a lot in service to our nation. For almost 10 years, he served in the Australian Army’s 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. As a Corporal, he trained new recruits to face the kind of challenges he encountered when he served on the frontline in East Timor.

Then tragically, when Mia was six, her beloved father took his life.

Elizabeth's Story

When Barry died, Elizabeth’s whole world changed in an instant. No longer an army wife, instead, Elizabeth found herself the single mum of four young children. Her oldest, fifteen, her youngest, only just turned three.

“Our family had been living in married quarters – that’s where Barry collapsed, where he died. And I got a letter from the Army asking me to vacate the premises within the month because they needed them.”
